Sabr’s Emad Hussain off to a red-hot start to the season Sep 30, 2019
by Emad Hussain

The first game of Week 2 featured Sabr, coming off a close 3-2 win over Ihsan in the previous week and Yaqeen, coming off a 1-1 tie with Ridha. The scoreboard and end result of a 1-1 tie does not tell the whole story of an action-packed game with end-to-end action throughout. Both teams were playing with a full line-up with the exception being Ali Murtaza from Sabr missing in action due to an injury sustained in the previous week’s game. Both teams started strong, trading chances back-and-forth, with several near misses and strong saves from both patrolmen of the piped cabanas, Rahil Ahmed (backup for Sabr) and Zakariya Bandaishah (Yaqeen). The period looked to be ending in a scoreless draw until with 15 seconds left, Farrukh Khan made a bank pass from his blue line to Emad Hussain. Emad, at the end of his shift mustered enough gas to get it across the blue line and took a weak slapshot from the top of the circle which seemed to fool Zakariya and went in between his left foot and the post for the first score of the game. The period ended with six shots for Sabr and eight for Yaqeen. The second period started off differently as penalties became the story. Tayyab Kalair on Yaqeen took a holding the stick penalty just 17 seconds into the period. Sabr, applying pressure in the offensive zone drew a second penalty, this time from Aazar Zafar just over a minute later for holding. This gave Sabr a two-man advantage for nearly a full minute. Fortunately for Yaqeen, their penalty killing came through and they were able to keep Sabr’s offsense at bay, ending the game perfect on the penalty kill. Sabr was then due for a penalty, where Emad Hussain took a needless hooking penalty on Tayyab Kalair in the neutral zone at 7:09, putting his team down a man. While the Sabr defense stayed strong and didn’t allow a goal, this was a turning point in the game as it energized the Yaqeen offense. For the last half of the second period, Yaqeen controlled much of the place, but were unable to beat Rahil. Sabr had some close calls on Zakariya, but a couple missed shots and saves kept them up by one. Finally, with 2:30 to go, Arslan Mian ripped a shot past Rahil, knotting up the game. Both teams lamented the missed opportunities to come out on top in this one, but should not be disappointed with the hard-fought 1-1 tie.
