Haya defeats Sabr in a tight game Mar 21, 2019
by Fahad Mohammad

With the regular season winding down, some teams are fighting for a chance to play another meaningful game while others are hoping to get on a roll heading into the playoffs.

Sabr entered this game having undergone some major reconstruction throughout the season and more recently with the addition of 3 talented players; with Farooq Sani and Azhar Zafar making their debuts in this game while Arif Khan decided on helping his team in another way by going for Umrah (MashAllah) and making dua for his team at the Kabah.

Sabr needed to win this game to keep their playoff hopes alive while Haya was looking to stay at the top of their division with Ridha right on their tails.

Haya realizing that they they would need to weather the early push from Sabr, came out to a strong start and scored an early goal from Ibrahim Butt who roofed a slapshot from the right circle past the goalie. Just before the game,  Haya defenseman Farrukh Khan had offered his hockey tape to Ibrahim on the condition that he score in this game and Ibrahim wasted no time living up to his end of the deal.

Sabr shrugged off that early goal against and went on the attack.  Azhar Zafar found himself on a partial breakaway down the left side and wristed a shot through the five-hole to tie the game at 1 apiece.

Humza Ali, who's had an MVP type season with his offensive and defensive play, put Haya back up by one near the end of the 1st half but it was Sabr who had better sustained pressure throughout the period, even finding themselves on a few odd-man rushes.

Sabr kept up their pace in the 2nd half, with guys like Waqar and Adil Chohan leading the way for their team and Yusuf Kapoor coming up with big saves to keep this a close game.  With their season winding down, their new acquisition, Azhar Zafar, scored his 2nd goal of the game with about 7 minutes remaining, on a goal that Fahad should never have allowed.

Realizing their need to win this game, Sabr pulled their goalie in a tie game in order to try and go for the win.  The strategy didn't pay off as Humza Ali was able to score into the empty net for his 2nd goal of the game to seal the victory and Sabr's fate as they were eliminated from playoff contention.
