Yaqeen and Haya end in a 1-1 tie Sep 25, 2018
by Fahad Mohammad

Coming off an early break in the season, game 1 of the night featured two teams that were drafted with opposing strategies in mind; Haya with likely the best defensive depth in the league up against Yaqeen with a #1 line that exploded for a combined 9 points in their first game.

After starting the season with a tie while missing some of their core players, Haya was fully loaded for this game and looking to make a statement in the early part of the season.  It didn't take long for Haya to assert themselves as they moved the ball around, cycled on the boards and got some quality chances on net.  Yaqeen's goalie did what he could to keep the score at 0-0 but Haya kept the pressure on Yaqeen's players; forcing turnovers and tiring out their defensemen.
With just over 7 minutes remaining in the first period, Haya's forward Yasin Admani took a pass from Salman Khalid and found himself with an open lane down the right wing.  He raced towards the net on a partial breakaway and sniped a 'water-bottle popping' shot just under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead.  Not only did Fahad Mohammad get beat with a laser shot over the shoulder, he then had to walk behind the net to pick up his water bottle off the ground.... oh the shame.

After a motivating talk from Yaqeen's leaders and some in-game adjustments; Yaqeen got off to a better start in the 2nd period.  They tested Yusuf Kapoor with some quality shots but were unable to beat him until near the half way point of the second period when Maaz Haq backhanded a ridiculous pass from the boards to Suleman Bhatti in front of the net who tipped it into the net to tie the game at 1-1.

The rest of the game went back and forth with both teams trading chances but both goalies knew the next goal was likely going to be the winning goal and so they stopped every shot that came their way.

Yaqeen had a glorious one-time chance in the dying seconds to take the lead but the shot sailed over the net and a hard fought game ended in a 1-1 tie.
