Shukr linguistically means “to display”. Islamically, the servant of Allah shows thankfulness (shukr) to their Creator by mentioning Allah's blessings upon him, and by praising and worshipping Him.
Al-Junaid (rahimahullah) said: "Thankfulness (Shukr) means that you do not look upon yourself as worthy of the gracious favors you have received."
{Nay, rather worship Allah only and be among the grateful.} (39:66)
{If you are thankful, I will surely give you more; but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is terrible indeed} (14:7)
